Year 8-12 Athletics Carnival

Several hundred athletes from Tenison Woods College converged on Marist Park recently to contest the annual Year 8-12 Inter house Athletics Carnival.

The hot and windy conditions failed to deter students as they battled it out against fellow competitors and the elements in a bid to bring home the covenant trophy.

The 2010 carnival commenced earlier in the week with the long distance events, where both the 1500 meter and 3000 meter races were run.

On Friday enthusiastic crowds, decorated in a myriad of colours, cheered on their teams for the annual carnival opener, the traditional progressive relay. The tradition symbolises the linking of all the year levels in the school and saw four students from each year level, from Reception to Year 12, represent their respective houses.

Friday also saw students from Year 8 to 12 participate in both the traditional championship events and the fun orientated novelty events.

With a highly committed house leadership team which included Torsten Gustavsson , Kareena-Maria Tralongo, Jess Holloway and Michael Elliot-Jones, expectations were high for Woods House to see if they could also take home the Athletics Shield and back their recent swimming carnival victory.

Woods House triumphed the carnival with 1604 points, ahead of Champagnat with 1434 point. Only two points separated third and fourth position, McAuley was able to edge out MacKillop for the third place.

Tenison Woods College Sports Coordinator commended the high level of team work, participation, support and encouragement that students showed throughout the day

“This year’s sports day was an excellent day with all teams participating with great sportsmanship.” Mr Stratford said.

In a spirited and exciting display of athletic ability a number of records were broken on the day and with the new records now set in place students will have a difficult task to break them in years to come.
