Year 8-12
Athletics Carnival

The
standard of competition was high and so were the spirits of
students from Tenison Woods College as the drama of another
athletics carnival unfolded last Friday (March 11).
In a
keenly contested athletics carnival, students from Year 8-12
put aside their academic aspirations for the day and battled
it out for sporting glory and the covenant House Cup.
With
ideal weather conditions, an enthusiastic crowd converged on
Marist Park, with colour, music and retro attire from their
parent’s era, to begin the day with the progressive relay.
Now
becoming the traditional opening event at the annual
Athletics Carnival, the baton relay saw students from each
year level, from reception to Year 12, represent their
respective houses, symbolising the linking of all the year
levels at the college.
Sports
Coordinator, Ciaran Buckley said the day was a wonderful,
community day for students, staff and parents with many
highlights including both team and individual efforts.
“By far
the most pleasing aspect of the day was the high level of
participation and enthusiasm shown throughout the day”
“Throughout the day students competed in a range of
traditional track and field events as well as fun orientated
novelty activities allowing all students the opportunity to
be involved in competition in a social atmosphere,” Mr
Buckley said.
The
frantic pace on the fields was mirrored on the side line,
with students displaying vigorous house and team spirit.
The House
Cup, which includes all events conducted throughout the day
was won by Champagnat with 1401 points followed by MacKillop
with 1312, Woods with 1230 and McAuley with a total of 1117
points.
In total
12 records on the day were broken and with these records now
set in place students will have a hard task to break them in
years to come.
“The
numerous new records represent an outstanding achievement by
many athletes and are very promising for the interschool and
Adelaide Athletics Carnivals,” Mr Buckley said.
The Age
Group Champions for 2011 were as follows:
Under 14
Girls Imogen Pratt
Under 14
Boys Bradley Slape
Under 15 Girls Meg Gazzard
Under 15
Boys James Davies
Under 16
Girls Georgina Brooks
Under 16
Boys Matthew Parslow
Under 20 Girls Sally Gazzard
Under 20
Boys Cameron Slape
To
conclude the day an array of cheers and chants from the
large crowds of interested spectators greeted the annual
staff vs student relay race which saw the student team
finding that extra reserve necessary to motor through the
field to cross the line ahead of the staff.
The top
performing athletes from the athletics carnival will now
begin training for the lower south east Interschool
Athletics Carnival held in Bordertown next week before
travelling to Adelaide to contest the Catholic
Co-educational Schools Athletics Championships at SANTOS
Stadium.
