Book Week 2009
- Book Safari

With literacy becoming a major focus in education throughout
Australia, students from schools across the South East
celebrated book week from 22 to 28 August together with
hundreds of other schools and libraries around the nation.
Since 1945 schools, public libraries, bookshops and families
have celebrated the annual event spending a week looking at
books as well as Australian authors and illustrators.
The theme for this years 64th Book Week was ‘Book
Safari’.
As part of Book Week activities, students from Tenison Woods
College showed their love of reading as they spent the week
celebrating Australian authors, illustrators and above all –
books. The College was abuzz, as classes took part in a
range of Book Week activities which included story telling
workshops, projects and craft activities, many of which were
based around the books short listed this year by the
Children’s Book Council of Australia.
The highlight of the week long celebrations was without a
doubt the spectacular Fancy Dress Parade held on Friday 28
August – in which students and teachers from the Junior
School transformed the mall into a kaleidoscope of colourful
costumes. Cats pounced among pirates, clowns played tag
with princes, pixies frolicked amidst the geese and
bespectacled wizards giggled with elephants.

As part of Book Week Celebrations schools throughout Mount
Gambier were also visited by members of the Mount Gambier
Public Library who ran a number of fun and interactive
workshops with students highlighting the importance of
reading.
Book Week is an annual celebration of outstanding Australian
children’s literature coordinated by the Children’s Boko
Council of Australia. The Book Council presents a shortlist
of the most exceptional children’s books published in the
past year, with winners and honours chosen from each
category.
The 2009 Book of the Year Award winners include Book of
the Year: Older Readers Tales from Outer Suburbia,
Book of the Year: Younger Readers Perry
Angel’s Suitcase Book of the Year: Early Childhood
How to Heal a Broken Wing Picture Book of the
Year: Collecting Colour
Book Week is always a tremendous opportunity for literacy to
be brought to life in classrooms and homes around the
country. The enthusiastic staff and students of the College
were proud to join in the nation-wide celebration.
