Clean Up
Australia Day

Children
across the South East will today (Friday 4th
March) roll up their sleeves and join thousands of fellow
students from across Australia to clean up their local
community for Schools Clean Up Day.
Inspiring children to care for the environment, the Schools
Clean Up Day is part of the
annual
Clean Up Australia Day campaign, which celebrates its 21st
national anniversary this Sunday.
Armed
with rubber gloves, hats and garbage bags, students from
nine schools around Mount Gambier will today take to sites
across the community making a
real difference to creating a cleaner, healthier environment
for future generations.
Tenison
Woods College School Captain Sally Gazzard said “Clean Up
Schools day was a great way of actively involving students
as well as informing them of the importance each of us have
in preserving this great nation.”
Since
1992 Schools Clean Up Day has allowed school students to
participate in Clean Up Australia as part of their school
community.
“Classes
will also use today to launch into units of working looking
at important issues including litter, waste, recycling,
water management, climate change and greenhouse effects as
they impact on the State's environment, communities and
industry sectors.” Miss Gazzard said.
In
Mount Gambier Clean Up Australia Chairman Ian Kiernan AO is
encouraging everyone to do their bit towards protecting
local ecosystems while improving the appeal of their area.
“Australians generally do the right thing, but with each one
of us producing two tonnes of rubbish every year, there is
still too much waste ending up in our natural environment,”
Mr Kiernan said.
“Every
piece of rubbish that ends up in our parks, waterways,
bushland and on our streets or beaches is a potential killer
of local wildlife,” Mr Kiernan said.
In 2010, more than 588,000 registered volunteers across
Australia pitched in at 7,073 Clean Up Sites. This year, as
part of the 21st anniversary, Clean Up is calling for the
support of every Australian to do their bit by joining
others for the annual Day.
“Clean Up Australia Day is a fantastic, fun event where
everyone in the local community can come together and pick
up rubbish to conserve the environment. Just one piece of
rubbish can make a difference and ensure your favourite
local beaches and parks stay clean for the future.”
Mr
Kiernan said.
Mount Gambier residents who would like
to be involved in the Community Clean Up Day held on Sunday
are invited to get involved by visiting
www.cleanupaustraliaday.org.au to
register a Clean Up Site.
