Inaugural Con
Brown Memorial Trophy

The inaugural Con Brown Memorial Trophy has been awarded to
one of Tenison Woods College’s rising sports stars, Tyler
Jones.
Named in
honour of talented young sportsman Con Brown, the trophy was
awarded recently at the annual sports carnival as a fitting
tribute to the legacy Con left and a permanent reminder of
his athletic performance and off field character.
The son
of Tantanoola’s Colin and Janie Brown, and brother to Taron
and Hayden, Con was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in
2006, losing his battle to the invasive disease in 2008, at
just 20 years of age.
Tension
Woods College Sports Coordinator, Daniel Stratford who also
had the opportunity to teach Con, described him as an
inspirational,
fun-loving and
talented sportsman. His bubbly
personality and wicked
sense of humour made Con a
popular young man with both staff and fellow students.
“A lover
of cricket, football, athletics and all things sport, Con
will always be remembered as an all-round great sportsman”
Mr Stratford said.
Attending Tantanoola Primary
School and later graduating from Tenison Woods College, Con
was
an active
participant in both local and school sports.
In 2004 Con was awarded the
Under 16s
Athletics Carnival
Champion Boys Trophy
and
still holds records today at the
College in several age group events, including the Under 14
and Under 16 100m and the Under 14 and Under 16 High Jump.
“The
introduction of the memorial trophy was a way that the
College community could remember the popular student who
always gave his best on any sporting field,” Mr Stratford
said.
“He was
one of those students who was involved in everything to do
with sport and always had a smile on his face while he did
it”
In a
trophy presentation at the conclusion of 2010 Athletics
Carnival, 14 year old Tyler Jones
was awarded the inaugural trophy for smashing a huge 4
seconds off the Under 14 400m record, taking home the title
of best single male performance of the day.
After
receiving the trophy from Con’s mother Janie and brother
Hayden, Tyler, a keen sportsman himself said he was both
“shocked and honoured” to be the first recipient.
For the
Year 9 student the significance of the award did not sink in
until he arrived home that night to discuss his days
successes with his mother. It was during this conversation
that he discovered that his mother Karina was actually Con’s
first teacher at Tantanoola Primary School.
Despite
his young age, Tyler is already looking at a career in PE
teaching when he leaves school.
“Tyler’s
achievement and love of sport, makes him a worthy recipient
for the inaugural Memorial Trophy. He shows great potential
to go on to be an outstanding athlete in the future,” Mr
Stratford said.
Tyler will now join a contingent of Tenison Woods College
athletes traveling to Adelaide on Sunday to contest the
Catholic Co-educational Schools Athletics Championships at
SANTOS Stadium before returning home to compete in the
Interschool Athletics Carnival in Mount Gambier.
