Dr Suess Day

Sam
I Am, with his green eggs and ham, joined Things Ones and
Things Two, Yurtle the Turtle and a small army of Cat’s in
the Hats and other Dr Seuss characters last week to
celebrate both the iconic children’s author and their love
of reading.
Reception students from Tenison Woods College gathered on
their reading mats to honour the man that brought them Cat
in A Hat, author Theodor Seuss Geisel.
Better known as Dr. Seuss, and described as the most beloved
children’s book author of all time, his works have been
delighting young children and helping them learn to read for
over 74 years.
While the real Dr Seuss died in 1991, the love for language
and reading that his works inspired lives on, as was
witnessed by the colourful celebrations held on Friday.
Throughout the day students participated in a variety of
activities and were able to get their hands dirty making ‘gloop’,
as well as creating some real ‘green eggs and ham’. Classes
shared books such as ‘Green Eggs and Ham’, ‘The Cat in the
Hat’, ‘Fox in Socks’ and many more.

Reception
teacher Daina Booth said in the weeks leading up to the day
of festivities, students investigated a number of classic Dr
Seuss books looking closely at the rhyming patterns as part
of their literacy lessons.
“His use of rhyme makes his books an effective tool for
teaching young children the basic skills they need to be
successful and develop a love of reading.”
“The day was a great way to get kids excited about reading,”
she said.
“Celebrating Dr. Seuss and reading sends a clear message to
children that reading is both fun and important.”
Over 200 million copies of Dr Seuss’ books have been sold in
15 different language translations around the world, with
children and adults alike enthusiastically sharing his
joyous and often ridiculous rhymes.
