Tenison Woods College Swimming Carnival                        

 

Woods House have made a splash at Tenison Woods College’s 36th Inter-house swimming carnival claiming victory on Monday, breaking a 12 year drought to have their names engraved as the 2010 winners on the Maney Shield.

 

In a tight battle to the end Woods led the carnival on 4,163 points, ahead of MacKillop with 4,059, McAuley on 3,891 points and Champagnat with 3,829 points.

With the mercury hitting 35.6 degrees, it proved ideal weather conditions for the carnival as students filled the Aquatic Centre decked out in their house colours with team spirits taking over the pool as the championship events began.

 

Tenison Woods College Sports Coordinator Daniel Stratford congratulated students on their outstanding efforts and thanked the house captains who led their teams to great success.

“It was great to see students willing to compete in all of the events, with many young students competing well above their age groups to gain valuable points for their house.”

“The enthusiasm of students in all Houses was great to see” Mr Stratford said.

 

“Even in the hottest part of the day students still backed their teams through to the end.”

 

Twelve records were broken at the carnival with several talented young swimmers recording outstanding individual achievements throughout the day including Emily Gazzard who broke records in every Under 13 Female stroke.

 

Madelyn van de Veerdonk and Nick Jenkin were also successful in breaking records in the Under 20 Female Breastroke and Under 20 Male Backstroke respectively.

U/13 Female 50m Freestyle – Emily Gazzard – 33.13

U/13 Female 50m Breastroke – Emily Gazzard – 47.27

U/13 Female 50m Backstroke – Emily Gazzard – 39.86

U/13 Female 50m Butterfly – Emily Gazzard – 36.03

U/20 Female 50m Breastroke – Madelyn van de Veerdonk – 41.65

U/20 Male 50m - Nicholas Jenkin – 34.77

 

Team Records Broken

U/14 Male 4x50m Medley – Woods – 3:25.27

U/16 Female 4x50m Medley – MacKillop – 3:52.00

U/12 Male 4x50m Freestyle – Woods – 3:28.40

U/13 Female 4x50m Freestyle – Champagnat – 3:03.91

U/13 Male 4x50m Freestyle – McAuley – 3:16.14

U/14 Male 4x50m Freestyle – McAuley – 2:46.75

 

“With another twelve records broken, students will have a hard task to break them in years to come.”

 

At the end of the day awards were presented to the male and female swimmer from each age group who accumulates the most points for their house during the championship events.

The top swimmers from eight schools across the South East will later this week converge on the Mount Gambier Aquatic Centre for the Interschool Swimming Tournament. In fierce competition students will go head to head against each other to bring home the Interschool Shield.
